HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The Connecticut Insurance Commissioner is warning consumers of a phone scam targeting policyholders.
Officials say in the scam, a caller poses as an insurance company representative and tells people that their policy is being canceled due to non-payment. The caller will then ask for a credit card payment over the phone in order to reinstate the policy.
The Connecticut Insurance Department says they have become aware of one instance of this scam in the state. In that case, the policyholder contacted his insurance agency to confirm his policy was in good standing.
“We urge consumers to be vigilant at all times but especially around the holidays. Never give out your credit card information to an unsolicited caller,” said Commissioner Katharine L. Wade. “If you have an agent or agency you deal with directly, contact them to verify the status of your policy or payment or call your insurance company’s customer service number.”
