A woman came into our Aging Answers seeking information on selecting health insurance. After listening to her situation, an information counselor discovered she was living on an income of $900 a month. She was unaware of many programs and benefits available to her. The additional benefits would result in the woman saving $200 each month. After the counselor helped her apply for these programs, the woman asked, "Can I spend some of this money on myself? I haven't had new shoes in many years. I would be so happy to have something more comfortable for all the walking I do. Can I spend some of this on new shoes?" To her delight, our counselor replied, "Of course, it's your money."
